“Nervous yet”- Aljamain Sterling tries to intimidate Petr Yan before their title rematch at UFC 272
Petr Yan and Aljamain Sterling
The fight between Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan that took place at UFC 259 Las Vegas was one of the most controversial bouts last year. In that fight, Yan lost his bantamweight title after delivering an illegal knee. This made Sterling the first-ever fighter in UFC to win a title by disqualification.
The shocking turn of events after the fight forced MMA fans to raise various questions regarding the decision to make Sterling the new champion. According to unified rules MMA, Yan’s knee was indeed illegal and under normal circumstances, the bout should have been declared as a ‘No Contest‘.
During the fight, it was clearly visible that the Russian was dominating his opponent in every aspect of the fight. Conventionally, Sterling is a wrestler and had already planned to shoot takedowns to stop Yan’s offense during the fight who is an all-out boxer. But, according to the stats, Sterling just managed to land one takedown out of seventeen attempts. On the other hand, Yan had more successful takedowns than the Americans.
After the controversial win Sterling was eager to have a rematch with Yan as he wasn’t satisfied in winning the belt that way. But his social media posts described the contrary as the fighter went all out in advertising that he is the rightful champ.
As the whole MMA world came together and asked the ‘Funk master‘ to get into the Octagon with Yan for the rematch, Sterling came up with the update about his neck surgery. According to the fighter, he was suffering from the pain of injury since his college days. Many fans pointed out that the timing of the surgery was rather suspicious.
