Conor McGregor once again shocked fans with an unexpected answer during an interview with TheMacLife at the TUF 31 arena. McGregor is scheduled to face Michael Chandler in the future following their stint as coaches at TUF 31. He was asked which weight class the fight should happen at, and his answer was totally a surprising one.
McGregor answered, “I’m gonna slice through Michael Chandler… at 185,” with a smile. McGregor knows how to reel fans in for his fights and seems to be promoting his upcoming fight well. It doesn’t make sense to fight at 185 pounds (Middleweight), but McGregor knows that fans will be curious to see where it leads. Michael Chandler is yet to respond to McGregor’s desire to fight him at 185 pounds.
TUF 31, featuring McGregor and Chandler as the coaches, has already been making headlines. There were reports from industry insider Danny Rubenstein that McGregor is using his influence backstage to get his fellow fighters into the TUF 31 roster. Also, last week, McGregor channelled his inner Homer Simpson to cut fighters to make room for the final roster.
Wherever McGregor goes, he will create the headlines. It is only reasonable to think that it is not the last headline feature that McGregor makes before returning later in the year to take on Michael Chandler.
If Conor McGregor wants the title, he needs a win over Michael Chandler
Conor McGregor is slowly approaching the end of his career. We do not know how much longer he wants to fight. He has indicated that he wants to fight for the title again. It is not easy to fight for the title as there are so many contenders in the Lightweight division.
McGregor needs to make a statement when he fights Chandler. He needs to show that he can still perform at a high level and can withstand the wrestling threat of Michael Chandler if he wants to take on Islam Makachev (if he stays champ) for the Lightweight Championship in the future. His path to victory over Chandler might be simple – precision striking can also crack Chandler’s chin and knock him out.
If McGregor cannot beat Chandler, he finds himself further away from a title shot. However, he can always get into huge money fights or legacy fights because of his star power.
