With the FIFA World Cup 2022 underway in Qatar, football is once again the new buzz around town. Ariel Helwani, a renowned MMA journalist had a hilarious take on the two types of people who are constantly going at each other over the sport. This came in response to Chael Sonnen’s comments about him.
In a conversation on the MMA Hour, Ariel Helwani criticized the people who incessantly argue over the sport and how good it is. He said there is a sect that says football is boring. Whereas, another sect argues that the others just don’t understand football. However, he lambasted both sections as he just pondered why they couldn’t just be content.
“What’s worse? The people who talk about how soccer sucks, who just loudly want to proclaim that they hate soccer? Or the people who act all hoity-toity.” Helwani stated. “Like ‘You don’t know football’ ‘You don’t understand football.’ Who’s more annoying? The people who just want to tell the world they don’t like football or the hipster people who tell you you understand football just because you don’t watch Bundesliga on a Saturday morning?… Why can’t people just be happy?” And he is right, both sects can be very annoying.

Helwani has had his fair share of controversy over the years. His feud with UFC President Dana White has become legendary over the past few years and most recently, Chael Sonnen managed to get into the bad books of Helwani. On his own YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen criticized Helwani for not being a real fan of football and only pivoting to it now because of the WC and the clout it would give him.
Helwani in turn, hit out at Chael several times on his podcast. And when a fan asked him about this, his response was, “I mean, it’s just the typical lazy take if we’re being honest.” He then explained that as of late, the only content he was consuming was related to football.

“All I’m consuming these days, like I go through waves, as viewer, as a listener, podcast consumer. Right now, it’s only soccer pods,” said Helwani about his media consumption habits recently.
He explained that he was truly invested in the sport of football. Ariel Helwani also said that football was now his kids’ favorite sport. And he ended this topic with an earnest plea, saying, “Let me live, let me enjoy, let me be a fan. It’s been a lot of fun.” It would seem Helwani has finally come around to becoming a fan of the biggest sport in the world.
