Belal Muhammad recently confirmed a backup spot for Colby Covington‘s fight with champion Leon Edwards. The undisputed title fight takes place at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Covington secured the shot after having served as the backup for Leon Edwards vs. Kamaru Usman 3. Covington himself has fought the latter as well.

Muhammad, the current #2 welterweight contender, took an extra jab at the fight records of Edwards and Covington. He was not impressed with either Leon “Rocky” Edwards or his title challenger. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Muhammad wrote:

Two most inactive bums in welterweight. Leon’s fought 4 times since 2021 Colby’s fought twice and ..I fought 7 times...

Muhammad last won a unanimous decision against Gilbert Burns at UFC 288. CEO Dana White previously said Muhammad would receive a welterweight title shot after extending his unbeaten streak to 10 with a May win over Burns. Belal will likely fight for the title next year, regardless of who wins at UFC 296.

At 23-3 MMA, 14-3 UFC, and a massive unbeaten streak, Belal deserves a shot at the title. Only time will tell when Belal receives his title shot and who he will face for the title fight.

Belal Muhammad confirms being backup fighter for Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington

Birmingham native Leon Edwards makes a title defense against Colby Covington this weekend. He faces “Chaos” for the UFC 296 headlining bout for the welterweight gold. As such, succeeding contender Belal Muhammad has chipped in the race sooner than later.

Speaking with MMA Junkie’s Farah Hannoun, Muhammad confirmed this Sunday that he’d weigh in as the backup fighter for the bout. In the unlikely scenario either fighter has to withdraw ultimately, which Muhammad was already critical of. Check out what he said below:

Edwards won a majority decision over three-time opponent and former pound-for-pound number one Kamaru Usman. Serving as a backup, Covington thus earned the title shot subsequently. Hence, Belal hopes for the same in the future.
