Brian Ortega thought he already won the featherweight title when he held Alex Volkanovski in the choke. Last year, Ortega got his second UFC title shot against Volkanovski by defeating Chan Sung Jung. The fight between Ortega and Volkanovski had a lot of hype around it and the fighters delivered what they promised. The fight was a showdown of both fighters who came well prepared and executed their plans.

During the fight, Ortega successfully got two clean chokes on Volkanovski but the Aussie was absolutely invincible that night. Volkanovski came out of both the chokes and finally won the fight via unanimous decision. It was a top notch performance by the champion and the whole fight community was shocked.

Ortega was recently at the UFC Long Island media day scrum where he had a conversation with the media.

During the interaction, Ortega was asked about his fight with Volkanovski and what happened when he escaped Ortega’s guillotine. While responding to the question, ‘T-City’ revealed that he was shocked how Volkanovski got out of the choke twice in a row. Ortega explained that when he locked the choke he was already sure that he was a world champion. He thought Volkanovski will tap but it didn’t happen.

“How the f* did this man get out of that choke? I was on top celebrating. I was in there and I had him in that guillotine and I was like, “” ‘I’m about to be a world champ.””. I was just waiting for the tap and then it never came…I was like, damn bro this is not my f** night or what’s going on,” said Ortega while remembering his fight at UFC 266.

The fight was clearly one of the biggest fights of the year 2021 and the fans were fully entertained by the fight. Ortega will try to get another title shot soon but since that fight, Volkanovski has already improved a lot. It would be interesting to see these fight again sometime in future.
