Chael Sonnen against idea of rematch if Israel Adesanya loses middleweight title to Alex Pereira at UFC 281

UFC 271 is scheduled to take place on November 12 and the main event features the middleweight title fight between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira. Both the fighters have known and fought each other two times in the past. Both the fights were in kickboxing tournaments and the Brazilian is leading the overall scores by 2-0.

Going into the fight, Adesanya will defend his title for the sixth time and it will be his third fight this year. It just shows how active Izzy is as a champion. On the other hand, Pereira is coming into the fight with an amazing knockout win against Sean Strickland at UFC 276.

The fight is going to be amazing and unlike most times, it might not be an easy win for Adesanya. Many believe that Pereira has what it takes to dethrone Izzy and former UFC superstar, Chael Sonnen also has a similar opinion.

Chael Sonnen recently posted a video on his official YouTube channel about the upcoming Pay-per-view events and featuring fighters.

While talking about the probability of Israel Adesanya losing the fight against Alex Pereira, Sonnen revealed when the rematch will take place. According to Sonnen, if Izzy loses the fight he should get a rematch right after as he was a dominant champion. However, Sonnen explained that there is a possibility that Pereira might day he doesn’t want to fight Izzy after beating him thrice. He said:

“If Adesanya loses to Pereira, history says the great who went down gets a rematch. Hold on, you’re forgetting, that score will be 0-3… if Pereira was to bring this to everybody’s attention and say ‘I don’t want to fight, I’m done with him… I’ve beaten him three times at the same thing.”

In order to Justify his case, Sonnen shared the instance between Joanna Jędrzejczyk and Valentina Shevchenko.

“I’ll give you a point of where this happened. It was ‘The Bullet’ vs. Joanna Jędrzejczyk and they had fought and ‘The Bullet’ got her and it was a very good, it was a very exciting match and I thought that Joanna had earned her way back… there was a backstory that they had kickboxed twice and that ‘The Bullet’ had won them both. That hurt Joanna,” said Sonnen.

Indeed, these cases are highly similar and there is a possibility that Izzy might not get a title shot right after he loses. However, for that conversation, Pereira will first have to win against Izzy who is not the same line he was before. It’s undoubtedly one of the most interesting title fights in a while.
