“It was not a robbery,” Chael Sonnen dismisses huge controversy surrounding Holly Holm vs Ketlen Vieira about the judges’ decision

Holly Holm vs Ketlen Vieira- Chael Sonnen

Ask MMA legend Chael Sonnen and chances are you may get an unpopular opinion on the most contentious topics, just like the one about the judges giving a split decision win to UFC women’s bantamweight Ketlen Vieira over former champion Holly Holm, who many thought did enough to beat Vieira by scores. The fight between Holm and Vieira took last week as the main event for UFC Vegas 55. There were other contentious decisions handed in fights such as the one between Eryk Anders and Jun-Yong Park.

The state of robbery during scoring in MMA has been a long time debate and there have been many ideas thought and brought to the table to fix the issue, however, none of them is the perfect solution. The sport of MMA has so many dimensions to score that it becomes already a complex topic, especially for the judges on what things to take care of during scoring. Some famous so-called robberies included the one in the rematch between Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway and the fight between Dominick Reyes and Jon Jones.

Chael Sonnen thinks that consensus in favour of Holly Holm to have won the competition is, however, agreeable

On his Youtube channel, Chael Sonnen uploaded a video talking about the surprise he has got that the fight between Holm and Vieira is still being talked about solely based on judges’ decisions and how such a detailed debate on all media outlets has never come to such extension before.

“For some reason, here we are a week later and this discussion is still going on, it surprises me,” says Sonnen I didn’t think it was a robbery, I don’t think anybody thought it was a robbery, not to mention the judges didn’t see it all for Vieira. It was a split decision, one judge thought that Holly had it. Seems like it’s a very close fight… but there’s a consensus that Holly won the fight, that is something that I agree with…” continues Sonnen coming back to again questioning why this fight in particular still lives on as compared to other close fights.

What do you make of the whole debate going on regarding all the criteria surrounding the scoring system? Who do you think won that fight between Holm and Vieira? Do you think it was really a fair way by the two judges to score for Vieira or were they incompetent? Do you remember of any other memorable robbery that people don’t talk much about now?
