“Threatening to give us what we like,” Chael Sonnen points out the irony in Deiveson Figueiredo’s ultimatum to leave 125 lbs
Deiveson Figueiredo- Chael Sonnen
For MMA Legend Chael Sonnen, Deiveson Figueiredo is just doing what fans might favour in the near future, an approach for a fresher competition with no issues over making weight, or at least lesser than before certainly. Figueiredo, who’s been recently upset with a lot of things, including this interim-title fight between Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara France which will take place at UFC 277. Figueiredo earlier had his own reasons to not fight both the fighters to defend his title.
Figueiredo’s reason for not fighting Moreno, which was supposed to make sense for the fourth time straight because of their history, was that Moreno has allegedly been racist in his attitude towards him. For Kara France, Figueiredo cited that he is recovering from an injury. Later on, Figueiredo also said that the UFC is not paying him enough to fight Kara France. Figueiredo last fought and won the flyweight title for the second time straight back in January 2022 at UFC 270.
Chael Sonnen cites weight-cutting issues to automatically shift Deiveson Figueiredo to 135 lbs in near future
It’s been more than 5 months that Figueiredo didn’t proceed for his next bout in reaction to which the aforementioned interim title fight was made and further in response to which Figueiredo said threatened to leave the 125 lbs division, where he is currently ruling as the champion. Sonnen took to his Youtube Channel to talk about what is going on with Figueiredo.
“That [Figueiredo leaving the divison] won’t be ghastly news to us because Figueiredo has missed weight on a number of occasions… I think 3 [weight misses] at the top of my head. I know of 2 but I think 3… So by-product of missing 125 pounds, makes you a 135 pounder… So the idea of Figueiredo competing and fighting at 135 pounds is extremely easy to swallow and very fathomable, we’ve seen it on multiple occasions… he is threatening to give us what we like, which is fresh and new matchups,“ says Sonnen.
What do you make of Chael Sonnen’s unique assessment of Figueiredo’s threat? Do you think Sonnen makes sense? Or do you think Figueiredo is just playing around for trying to hit a better pay day and will keep on fighting at 125 lbs? Who do you think will be the next title challenger in line against Figueiredo, former champion Brandon Moreno or Kai Kara France?
