In 2011, UFC put a panel of champions for a media appearance. Legends such as Dominick Cruz, Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar, Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, and Cain Velasquez appeared on the panel. They were reigning champions of their respective division at the time. Twelve years later, Jones remains the only one with a championship belt. Marlon “Chito” Vera commented on a Twitter post mocking Khabib Nurmagomedov and indirectly praised Jones as the GOAT.  

ESPN MMA’s X account posted about the panel of champions from 2011. Marlon Vera wrote, “And some of u idiots call kabib the goat lol.” The comment did not sit well with the Khabib fans. They brought up Jones’ steroid failure and personal life issues to clap back at Vera. However, some did support Vera’s claim of Jones as the MMA GOAT.

The Khabib fans are adamant about the Dagestani fighter’s status as the MMA GOAT. He has an undefeated record and only lost three or four rounds at best in his career. This remains a remarkable feat in MMA. However, he also retired early and only after defending the championship three times. The championship defenses will surely be a limitation in Khabib’s GOAT argument.

Demetrious Johnson, Kamaru Usman, Israel Adesanya, Anderson Silva, and Georges St-Pierre had more title defenses than Khabib. On the other hand, Jon Jones has the most title defenses in UFC history. Both Jones and GSP moved up in weight to win another title. These are some of the records Khabib does not have on his resume.

Fans erupt as Marlon Vera picks Jon Jones as GOAT over Khabib Nurmagomedov

Marlon Vera set Twitter on fire with his comments about Khabib Nurmagomedov and Jon Jones. He trolled fans for calling Khabib the GOAT. It did not sit well with the Khabib fans. They went on Twitter to defend their favorite fighter. Check out some of the fan reactions:

Most people consider Jon Jones as the GOAT of MMA. Nevertheless, Khabib’s undefeated status remains a remarkable feat in MMA. He also paved the way for other Dagestani fighters to succeed in the UFC. His contribution to the sport of MMA has an everlasting legacy. However, Jon Jones’ fighting career remains unmatched.
