Javier Mendez gives fight fans new hope about the much-anticipated return of Khabib Nurmagomedov. “The Eagle” is one of the biggest names in the world of MMA and has numerous fans all around the world. The former UFC lightweight champion was a role model both inside and outside the octagon. After the unfortunate death of his father in 2021, Nurmagomedov fought his last fight before announcing his retirement.
After retiring, he continued to be seen as a prominent representative of the sport. Nurmagomedov also supported his childhood friends as a coach, including the current lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev. However, earlier this year, he announced his decision to completely step away from MMA. Since then, his fans have been constantly curious about his comeback as a fighter or even as a coach.
Recently, Nurmagomedov’s former coach and friend, Javier Mendez, talked about Nurmagomedov’s potential comeback in the future. He said,
"I think at some point when his kids are old and then they're revolved, I think he will be back. Who knows when that will be, he can decide when that time comes. But obviously, at some point, if he does come back, it's gonna be a great opening for everybody to have such a great man and coach, coming to help them."
Mendez explained that one of the biggest reasons for Nurmagomedov’s retirement is to spend more time with his kids. According to Mendez, someday when Nurmagomedov’s kids are all grown up, he might come back to the world of MMA. Mendez thinks if this ever happens, it will be a great deal for young fighters.
Javier Mendez talks about the training method of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s camp.
Javier Mendez and Khabib Nurmagomedov have known each other since 2012, when the ‘Eagle’ joined the American Kickboxing Academy. This was followed by a lot of other fighters from Dagestan joining Nurmagomedov and training under Javier Mendez in AKA.

Throughout that time, Mendez and Nurmagomedov’s relationship grew and he became a UFC champion too. Nurmagomedov’s camp also contained other fighters, for example, Islam Makhachev, Usman Nurmagomedov, and many other talented fighters.
In an interview, Mendez talked about the training methods of the Dagestani fighters and they used calisthenics to build their strength. Mendez remarked that those individuals didn’t primarily focus on heavy weightlifting; instead, they emphasized exercises like pull-ups and bodyweight training.
Mendez was particularly impressed by Usman, noting that he had seen very few people perform as many chin-ups as Usman did, with him doing over 30 of them. Currently, both Makhachev and Usman are lightweight champions of UFC and Bellator respectively and it seems like their dominance will stay there for a few more years.
