Colby Covington claims ‘King of Miami’ title following Jorge Masvidal’s unpleasant retirement
Here is how Colby Covington is claiming the 'King of Miami' title following Jorge Masvidal's retirement.
UFC veteran Jorge Masvidal announced his retirement from the organization at UFC 287 in his home ground in Miami, Florida. UFC 287 had an exciting fight card, drawing over nineteen thousand attendees whilst everyone witnessed one of their favorite fighters hang up their gloves.
Jorge Masvidal fought Gilbert Burns in the co-main event. Burns dominated the fight from start to finish and the match ended with a decision in favor of Gilbert Burns.
Masvidal had previously stated that UFC 287 would be his final test. If he couldn’t perform this time, it was time for him to hang up his gloves. True to his word, Jorge Masvidal announced his retirement from the UFC in the octagon interview alongside Joe Rogan.
UFC President Dana White commended Jorge for making the right decision and appreciated his highlight moments in the organization. Meanwhile, long-time rival Colby Covington rejoices at the news of his retirement and shares a picture on Instagram captioned, “The Undisputed King of Miami and The Welterweight Division ???”, a term Jorge Masvidal usually would refer himself as.
Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington’s relationship
Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington were once dear friends. Their long-running rivalry began due to a monetary dispute between Covington and one of Masvidal’s coaches. During the build-up to their highly anticipated showdown at UFC 272, the two competitors’ rivalry erupted into personal and aggressive trash-talking.
Jorge Masvidal allegedly assaulted Covington outside a Miami restaurant. He’s now facing charges for it. Masvidal denies the claims and allegations against him.
Masvidal maintained his innocence, pointing out that the attacker was wearing a COVID mask, something he swore he would never do. Jorge’s aggravated battery charge in Florida was a third-degree felony. According to court records, the State Attorney’s office has opted not to pursue an indictment on that charge. Masvidal’s charge for aggravated violence while wearing a hood or mask was later marked “NO ACTION.” Masvidal had vowed on Joe Rogan’s podcast to eliminate Colby Covington in the octagon. Since he announced his retirement, we may not get to see another Covington vs Masvidal even though it isn’t uncommon for fighters to come out of retirement.
