Colby Covington is one of the most politically active fighters in the UFC. The three-time welterweight title contender has always publicly endorsed Donald Trump. The former president was in attendance in his latest fight with Leon Edwards at UFC 296. However, Trump left the arena midway through Covington’s post-fight speech after a lackluster loss to Edwards. Now, Covington has endorsed yet another Republican candidate.
Recently, Covington posted a picture of himself with Kari Lake, the Republican Candidate for the 2024 United States Senate election in Arizona. She previously narrowly lost to Katie Hobbs in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election. Moreover, like Donald Trump after the 2020 Presidential election, she also claimed victory in the gubernatorial election as she made accusations of voter fraud. Nonetheless, this is what Covington captioned his Instagram post with Lake.
'This is not about money, it’s about our country.' We’re truly blessed to have warriors like @karilake fighting to take back America from the swamp ??.Colby Covington via Instagram
MMA fans trolled Colby Covington for the post. The fans found similarities between Lake and Covington as both could not win in their respective careers. Covington fought three times for the undisputed title, twice against Kamaru Usman and once against Edwards. In the second fight with Usman, he came agonizingly close as many felt the judges ‘robbed’ him of a victory. However, his first and last title attempts ended decisively in his opponent’s favor.
Covington was the subject of criticism when he referenced Edwards’ murdered father during their trash talk. Even UFC CEO Dana White called Covington a ‘scumbag’ for his action. However, he admitted that PPV sales went up due to it. After the loss, Covington dropped down to fifth in the welterweight rankings.
Fight fans react to Colby Covington’s Instagram post with Republican candidate
Colby Covington is a controversial fighter in the UFC. His remarks have often made enemies from around the world. However, he also has a fan base that has always supported him. Nonetheless, he lost a lot of fans when he made insensitive remarks to Leon Edwards at the UFC 296 press conference. To make matters worse, he was terrible in the fight against Edwards.
Nonetheless, after the fight, he once again endorsed Donald Trump. In his recent Instagram post, he endorsed another Republic candidate, Kari Lake. See how the fight fans reacted to the post below.
After losing to Edwards at UFC 296, Covington targeted a fight with Stephen Thompson. Thompson also fought at UFC 296 but lost to Shavkat Rakhmonov. Nonetheless, as of now, Covington did not have a fight lined up. He has previously stated his interest in entering the political sphere, and his recent Instagram post with Lake might be a baby step toward it.
