Jon Jones vs Francis Ngannou was one of the most anticipated fights in the last few years and Dana White was pretty excited to make that fight. However, things went south when Ngannou decided to leave the UFC a few months ago. However, this resulted in a heavyweight title fight at UFC 285 against Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane.
Going into the fight, many expected to see some high-level MMA action given that both fighters have a reputation for being extremely technical. Gane gained momentum by defeating Tai Tuivasa in his previous bout, but at UFC 285, things didn’t go so well for the Frenchman. Jones took him down and submitted him immediately after the first bell, he made it look very easy and became the new heavyweight champion.
After that fight, Dana White was asked about the fight that many wanted, Jones vs Ngannou. While answering the question, White mentioned that he doesn’t think Ngannou would have had any chances against Jones.
He said: “let me tell you what: I think a lot of other people feel this way, I think that’s exactly the way [UFC 285] would’ve gone if [Ngannou] was in there, too. Him and Ciryl had a five-round war. If Ciryl doesn’t go for that submission, Ciryl probably wins that fight at the end of the fifth round there.” to TMZ sports.
According to White, the fight between Cyril and Ngannou was competitive. However, Jones just dominated the fight and is arguably better than both the other fighters.
Dana White reveals that Francis Ngannou ran away from the Jon Jones fight
After Francis Ngannou departed from UFC, many fans criticized the former heavyweight champion for being scared of Jon Jones. Many accused Ngannou of leaving the UFC because he didn’t want to face defeat against Jones.
Previously, there were no solid proofs for this assumption but Dana White‘s recent remarks do suggest some interesting points. According to White, for the last two years, he tried hard to make the fight between Jones and Ngannou. However, the Frenchman avoided that fight multiple times.
“I tried making that fight for two years. He didn’t want the fight,” said White. ” Do you know what I mean? He didn’t want the fight. And he left here without even having another deal in place. And I know how the boxing world is.”
After all that criticism, Ngannou made his statement and confirmed that at this stage of his career, he’s not scared of anybody in the world. He respects Jones’s accolades but he never backed down from fighting him.
