Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov had one of the fiercest rivalries ever in MMA. The fight with McGregor skyrocketed Nurmagomedov’s fame as he became a big superstar for Dana White and the UFC in the Middle East. The duo headlined UFC 229 in Las Vegas in a fight that broke several records in combat sports. Moreover, the fight is extremely popular in the eyes of fight fans across the globe.
One of the main reasons for the rivalry was not the fight itself but the incidents before and after the fight. One such incident is the infamous dolly throw incident. It happened after Khabib Nurmagomedov slapped Artem Lobov, a close friend of McGregor. UFC CEO Dana White spoke of the incident in his recent appearance on Julian Edelman‘s podcast, Games with Names. This is what White said about the infamous incident.
Khabib and his crew ran into one of Conor's buddies, slapped him. He called Conor and told him. Conor loaded up a bunch of thugs on a plane from Ireland. They jumped on a f*cking G650 and f*cking flew out here...That's what happens when street kids make some money. f*cking jump on a G650 and fly to New York and start a f*cking rumble.Dana White via Games with Names podcast
White went on to state that McGregor faced legal persecution for the incident. Moreover, the incident caused injuries to several UFC fighters, with Michael Chiesa among them. Chiesa filed a lawsuit, which McGregor settled out of court. Former UFC flyweight title challenger Ray Borg also suffered an injury due to the incident.
The incident happened days before UFC 223 when Artem Lobov had a fight scheduled. However, the UFC removed him from the card. Funnily enough, Lobov and McGregor had a falling out recently. Lobov filed a lawsuit demanding compensation for the sale of McGregor’s Proper 12 Whiskey. However, McGregor won the lawsuit.
Dana White on doing business with Conor McGregor
Conor McGregor is the biggest superstar in MMA and among the richest athletes ever. UFC CEO Dana White had even remarked McGregor was the MMA version of Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali. Even though he has not fought in almost three years, fans highly anticipate his return.
White has always spoken of McGregor in high regard. Fans and fighters attribute McGregor’s absence to the fight purse. However, that is not the case. White remarked in his appearance on the Games with Names podcast that McGregor is the best person to do business with.
McGregor’s last fight was a Doctor Stoppage loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. He suffered a leg break at the end of the first round of the fight. McGregor had announced that he would fight Michael Chandler in June. However, Dana White revealed that they expect a later date for McGregor’s return.
