UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards has had quite the career from tough fights and respect from peers to cheating claims and controversial wins. As it seems like the Leon Edwards vs Colby Covington fight is going to be fixed, Edwards displayed hostility towards it saying he’ll turn down the fight. Dana White had his own thoughts which were not leaning toward Edwards’ opinion.

Adding to the disdain that fans have over Covington, who has always been comfortable playing the bad guy, White sticks up for him. This did not sit right with the fans with some of them saying Colby has “Dana White Privilege” despite not facing strong contenders.

At the press conference after UFC San Antonio, a reporter goes on to confront White by telling him that the reason why Colby doesn’t deserve the fight is that he hasn’t fought since May 2022. The UFC President countered the reporter by saying “well he got jumped and was actually injured”. White also said “Leon didn’t fight for like almost two years, he got the shot”, referencing the almost 2-year break from the octagon.

The UFC President seems assured about giving Colby Covington a shot despite Edwards’ denial of taking the fight offer. The denial came from beating Usman twice, who beat Colby in both of their bouts which took place in 2019 and 2021. White says he doesn’t blame Leon although saying Covington definitely deserves a shot against him since he has been a champ for a while.

The UFC President Dana White giving Colby Covington a shot against Leon Edwards despite being out of the octagon since last year rubbed a lot of fans and fighters the wrong way. The UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards was no exception. Edwards went on to claim that “Dana White privilege is definitely real” accusing White of partiality toward certain fighters.

In a recent episode of ‘The MMA Hour’ hosted by popular MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Leon digs at Colby Covington and Dana White. When asked about the next contender being Colby Covington, he said “He [Covington] ain’t getting the title shot. He went out there beats Masvidal. Sat out for like a year and a half, not even tweeted or nothing, went missing for a year, and randomly pops up at the weigh-ins. It doesn’t make sense to me at all.”

The champion went on to say that he will not accept the fight with Covington as he does not deserve a title shot. It is not unusual for fighters to disagree with matchmakings in the UFC and Edwards seems set on his decision.
