Dana White reveals what REALLY went down behind Khamzat Chimaev’s BRUTAL weight cut
Dana White and Khamzat Chimaev
Khamzat Chimaev went from being the most-liked fighter to the most-hated in a span of one day. Dana White explains the “weight cut” fiasco of the Chechen fighter that led to the chaos at UFC 279.
The fans may have hated the UFC for matching the legend, Nate Diaz against the bogeyman Khamzat for the headliner of UFC 279. Thanks to Chimaev’s weigh-in mishap, Dana White and co were forced to reshuffle the card last moment to keep the PPV event running. Though fans are happy about Diaz vs Ferguson matchup, Khamzat sure isn’t on anyone’s good books.
Khamzat Chimaev came in weighing 8 pounds more than the welterweight limit and showed no signs of remorse for his failed weigh-in. “Borz” claimed that he was advised by the doctors to not cut any more weight. Fans did not buy the story from Khamzat but Dana’s latest interview might clear things up.
“He started cramping up…” – Dana White reveals Khamzat’s health condition
Dana confirms that Chimaev actually did go through a brutal weight cut and was indeed asked to stop his weight cut. “So what happened was, he was cutting weight. If you saw him yesterday, he was very, very lean already and he should’ve come in on weight,” said Dana in the interview with ESPN MMA.
“He started to cut weight and he started locking up and cramping, all the things that happen from a bad cut. Unlike ten years ago, when we were doing this, they call in and we send a doctor up and the doctor determines whether he should keep cutting weight or not and the doctor told him he shouldn’t,” said White confirming that it was Khamzat’s health which was at risk during the weight cut.
The UFC was quick to come up with the new matchups for the UFC 279 main card. The line-up now is Nate Diaz vs Tony Ferguson, Khamzat Chimaev vs Kevin Holland, and Li Jingliang vs Daniel Rodriguez. Khamzat still remains to be the villain of the card after the brawl and weigh-in mishap.
The revised lineup couldn’t have been more perfect. The main event is a fight that has been long due for the fans and they finally get to watch Nate and Tony go at each other at the end of their careers.
