Darren Till has accumulated a terrible 1-5 record in the last four years in the UFC, which is worlds away from we saw of the British fighter in 2017 and 2018.

It was imperative for Darren Till to come into UFC 282 looking and feeling different from when he faced Derek Brunson last year, as he looked completely out of shape, and didn’t see to have the grappling acumen to face the American. Brunson had taken Till into deep waters and later finished him with a rear naked choke.

Against Dricus Du Plessis, he looked marginally better and had success on the feet. Yet, the tale in the octagon remained the same. That is, despite Till’s striking ability, Du Plessis was able to control him on the ground, and the fight almost looked like a closed deal due to the insane ground and pound displayed by the South African. Banking on his grappling success, Du Plessis submitted Till in the last round.

It might feel like Till could be close to being on thin ice with the UFC with regards to renewing his contract. But, it seems as if Dana White has got his back. Speaking at the post-fight presser, the UFC President said, “I mean that’s fight of the night. I don’t think his stock drops at all. If he would have went out there and got destroyed in the first round, like it looked like was going to happen, but he did the exact opposite. He weathered that storm, stayed out of submissions.

Having a fight selected as the fight of the night is an honour for the two fighters who competed in it. Such was the case for Dricus Du Plessis and Darren Till. While Dana White backed Til despite him losing, he did not fail to heap praise on Du Plessis for his amazing performance against the British middleweight.

He said, “And for Du Plessis, what an incredible win for him. I think that slam at the end, I think it took the life out of Till… that was brutal.” Brutal it was, indeed. Dricus Du Plessis showed the versatility of his skillset by showcasing a brilliant level of grappling, despite being a former kickboxing champion, and an elite striker.

Right now, it looks Dricus Du Plessis can begin his ascent up the middleweight rankings. For Darren Till, however, it feels like a lot of time for reflection is needed, if he is to come back not only from yet another defeat, but also another ACL injury.
