“Glad I’m free” – Dana White’s nod not needed by Georges St-Pierre to chase new pastures as contract FINALLY ENDS

Georges St-Pierre (L) and Dana White

Georges St-Pierre is usually top three on the list of any MMA fan when asked as to who comes atop their ranking of the greatest of all time. And, his inclusion has a lot of backing by evidence inside the octagon.

His last fight in the octagon was more than five years ago, back in 2017, when he challenged Michael Bisping for the middleweight belt. Despite not always finishing people, GSP was able to pull out a choke from the upper echelons of submissions, to tap out the Briton in the third round.

However, most people might not know the fact that, despite unofficially announcing his retirement in 2017, he was still under contract by the UFC. What this means was that he could not chase newer pursuits – say, for instance, boxing. Now, his contract has finally ended, and a rejoiced St-Pierre had much jubilation to share.

Speaking to MMAJunkie, he said, “I’m glad I’m free, I can do whatever I want.” However, that doesn’t automatically entail his participation in other combat events. He added, “My days of trying to prove I’m the strongest guy in the world are gone, you know what I mean? My heart is not there anymore to do this.

Although he doesn’t feel any willingness to step into the ring anymore, he definitely is enjoying his time doing what he likes (he stepped into the role of promoter and analyst for the Jake Paul vs Anderson Silva event). The reason for that is self-explanatory – under the UFC’s strict contractual obligations, it can be assumed that GSP was held back from the pursuits he really wanted to partake in.

For those who didn’t know, St-Pierre was stopped from boxing former star pugilist Oscar De La Hoya by Dana White. The reason for that was provided by the Canadian himself, when he appeared on Ariel Helwani’s MMA hour, saying, “He says to me that the reason why he did not want it is because he thought that Oscar would basically destroy me in a boxing match.

He continued, “So what Dana says — listen to this — then he came back and he asked me if I wanted to fight Khabib.”

Clearly, Georges St-Pierre wasn’t too impressed with the tight leash White and the promotion had around his neck, and the subsequent contractual freedom has come after a long time for the Canadian. However, it might be a little too late, as he has expressed no desire to get into the octagon or the ring again unless the event is ‘well organised and risks of injury are to the minimum.
