Daniel Cormier recently disclosed his interaction with David Goggins. Goggins joined Tony Ferguson‘s corner team during UFC 296. Ferguson suffered a decision loss against Paddy Pimblett. Goggins expressed concerns about Ferguson’s future in the sport.
Daniel Cormier had previously expressed uncertainty about Goggins’ ability to help Ferguson overcome his challenges. Tony Ferguson has seen a string of losses in his last couple of fights. Despite Ferguson’s valiant effort in the fight, Goggins reportedly admitted that it might be time for Ferguson to retire. Daniel Cormier said in a recent Funky and the Champ episode with Ben Askren:
Even David Goggins thinks it should be time for Tony Ferguson...But David Goggins, who cornered him today, came up to us at the end of the fight and said, 'Tony may retire after this.' And I said, 'Well, is he?' And he goes, 'I don't know.' But we gave our opinions and said, 'Maybe it is time for Tony to retire.'Daniel Cormier via YT
Cormier revealed that many did not expect Tony Ferguson to last even 15 minutes of the fight. Tony Ferguson had his glory days as the former interim lightweight champion in the UFC.
Ferguson took to social media to address retirement rumors after his loss to Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296. In his post, Ferguson said he had no plans to retire and remained determined to continue. He also thanked his fans for their support and urged them not to lose faith in him.
David Goggins helped Tony Ferguson prepare for UFC 296 by putting him through a Hell Week of training. Goggins also served as Ferguson’s cornerman for the fight against Paddy Pimblett. Ferguson said that Goggins treated him like a soldier and “crushed” him to break him out of his own head. Ferguson said the training was exactly what he needed mentally.
Dana White and Paddy Pimblett on Tony Ferguson’s potential retirement
Tony Ferguson put on a gritty performance against Paddy Pimblett at UFC 296. However, Paddy Pimblett was ultimately too much for him. Pimblett, who had been out of the cage for a year due to an ankle injury, dominated the former interim lightweight champion.
Pimblett scored early damage and then spent most of the next 10 minutes staying on top of Ferguson. After the fight, Pimblett embraced Ferguson and paid tribute to him, calling him “an absolute legend.” Paddy Pimblett defended Ferguson from retirement calls at the same press conference, saying it’s the person’s decision.
However, at the UFC 296 post-fight press conference, Dana White said he would like to see Tony Ferguson retire. White said that Ferguson has been slower than in his last six fights. According to the UFC CEO, Ferguson’s best days were behind him, and he thought Tony should retire.
