Compared to other sports, mixed martial arts is still young and evolving. However, throughout the history of MMA competitions, fans have witnessed great fights and top-notch fighters. Because MMA has so many weight classes and talents, the masses usually get into a confrontation on who is the greatest. While names such as GSP and Jon Jones often come up, Demetrious Johnson is a common name when GOATs are discussed. 

Making his professional MMA debut in 2007, Demetrious Johnson made a name for himself in the UFC. In his early days with the promotion, ‘Mighty Mouse’ competed in the bantamweight division. However, the fighter later moved to ply his trade in the flyweight division. Defeating Joseph Benavidez, Johson became UFC flyweight champion and went on to have the most successful reigns MMA has seen. ‘Mighty Mouse’ holds the record for most consecutive title defenses and is the second longest reigning champion in the UFC. Apart from this, Johnson has several other records attached to his time in the promotion. His performances in the octagon have made many believe that the former 125-pound UFC champion is the greatest fighter of all time.

While Johnson had a very successful run in the UFC, the major turn in his MMA career came when the fighter was traded to ONE Championship for Ben Askren. Many wondered how Johson would fare in the new settings. But as expected, Johnson once again prevailed and became champion.

Until now, Demetrious Johnson has had successful outings in ONE Championship. In 2021, Johnson fought Adriano Moraes for the ONE flyweight title. While many expected the American to win, Moraes knocked Johnson out in round 2. Such losses can often impact the career of a fighter. However, those who know ‘Mighty Mouse,’ are aware of his toughness and willingness to come back.

In August 2022, Johnson faced Moraes in a much-awaited rematch on ONE Championship’s debut on Prime Video. With revenge set on his mind, ‘Mighty Mouse’ knocked out Moraes to become the new 135-pound champion of ONE Championship. 

Johnson’s finish of Moraes was regarded as spectacular by many. The newly crowned champion spoke about his finish after the bout. Johnson said, “I threw the knee, and once I knew that landed, it’s a kill shot. I was like, ‘Ok that’s a game,’ and just walked off.”

There is no doubt that with this win, Johnson has further solidified his position of being an all-time great. However, now it will be interesting to see what the fighter decides to do next.
