The UFC 284 main event was expected to be one of the biggest title fights ever and it delivered what it promised. The number of pound-for-pound fighters went against the number two and gave fans an extremely entertaining fight. The native hero, Alexander Volkanovski got a massive welcome from the fans and both he and Makhachev had mutual respect for each other.
As the fight started, both Makhachev and Volkanovski kept the fight on their feet and managed the distance. Both connected a few shots however, Makhachev used his reach advantage to the fullest. At the end of the first round, Makhachev got a takedown and was able to control Volkanovski for the rest of the time.
In the second and third rounds, Makhachev got better with his striking and was connecting more than Volkanovski. On the other hand, the Aussie made it hard for Makhachev to keep him on the ground. Volkanovski’s takedown defense was out of this world and it shocked the fans.
Volkanovski became the first fighter to take Makhachev to the fifth round and was not giving up on the Dagestani’s wrestling. No matter how many times Makhachev took him down, Volkanovski was able to get up. The featherweight champion showed why he’s a cardio freak as in the fifth round he was still pressing Makhachev at a crazy pace. Volkanovski did manage to give Makhachev his best fight however, it wasn’t enough to win. At the end of the rounds, Makhachev was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

The fight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski was extremely close and both fighters showed what they are made up of. After this win, Makhachev has now taken the spot of UFC pound-for-pound number one fighter on the roaster. However, many fans are not happy with it all. Some Twitter users have even called the fight a robbery as Volkanovski should have won it fair and square.
After the fight, Volkanovski was angry but looked satisfied with the result. He gave credit to Makhachev and received the same in return. Many fans believe that Islam Makhachev doesn’t deserve the P4P number one spot and that the UFC should think about running back this fight.
