Dominick Reyes after his knockout over Weidman

Dominick Reyes is the best example of how brutal the sport MMA can be. Many commentators and analysts have forever emphasized on how a single takedown, single strike or a single moment can change the course of the fight and potentially one’s career. Dominick Reyes experienced this first hand in his fall from the upper echelons of the light heavyweight division

Reyes met his peak when he faced off against Jon Jones in a very close fight that many fans argue should have ended in Reyes dethroning the long-reigning champion. Even before Jon, Reyes had a terrifying knockout victory over former Middleweight Champ, Chris Weidman on his way to the title. While Jon shortly announced his hiatus from the sport after their bout, Reyes was all set and ready to fight for the vacant championship.

In a fight scheduled for Abu Dhabi at The Fight Island, Reyes was treated as the homecoming king as he prepared to face off against Jan Blachowicz. Blachowicz who had a late-career resurgence was still a relatively unknown name and similar to Reyes had knocked out a former Middleweight Champion in Luke Rockhold to earn his title shot. While many expected the fight to be competitive the absolute shock of Jan’s power left everyone speechless as Reyes slowly withered under the power and ruthless pressure of the Polish man.

After the fight, Reyes was set to face rising contender, Jiri Prochazka. This bout too saw Reyes take heavy damage but was able to fish out some of his own. The fight ended after a stunning spinning elbow by Prochazka connected on Reyes, knocking him out cold. Since then Prochazka has gone on to become next in line to challenge for the title.

Now after a year-long hiatus the former #1 contender has announced his intentions to return to the top on Twitter. He said, “Not gonna lie, It’s been very motivating and a lil tough watching the ufc these last few months.” Reyes then pointed out that he had never taken any easy fights and how he prides himself in having an ever-ready attitude saying, “I’ve only fought the best, I’m a down-ass mfer and I have seen the errors of my ways.”
