“He wants freedom for his people,” Donald Trump’s friend Colby Covington surprisingly lends support to Conor McGregor’s political aspirations

Conor McGregor recently announced his aspirations to become the President of the Republic of Ireland. This was due to the current political situation in the country. Now, Colby Covington, an ardent supporter of Donald Trump, announced his support for McGregor for his aspirations.

All Out Fighting YouTube channel spoke with Colby Covington, and the title challenger remarked about Conor McGregor’s political aspirations. This is what Covington commented about McGregor:

Yeah, I think Conor would be a great leader. I think that he has a lot of those leadership, World Championship qualities. So, I, and he believes in freedom, which is most important. So, I respect Conor so much because of how much he cares about his people and how much he wants freedom for his people.

McGregor’s political aspirations drew comparison to Donald Trump, the former US President. So it comes as no surprise to see Covington support McGregor. Covington and his bitter rival Jorge Masvidal are Trump’s favorite fighters. Trump recently gave his blessings for Covington to become champion at UFC 296. Moreover, he also said that he would attend the event with Dana White.

Even though Colby Covington verbally insults almost all the UFC fighters, he has remained complimentary of McGregor for the most part. Interestingly, it might be a move to get a big money fight against the Irishman. Colby Covington has already discussed defending the welterweight title against Islam Makhachev if victorious at UFC 296 against Leon Edwards.

Colby Covington praises the talent and impact of Conor McGregor

In a recent interview with Mirror Fighting, Colby supported McGregor’s presidential ambitions in the Republic of Ireland. In addition to the political praise, Covington also praised McGregor’s fighting capability and impact.

Covington praised McGregor as a world-class athlete responsible for increasing the popularity of the sport. This is what Covington said about McGregor as a fighter in the interview:

The guy's already been a world-class fighter, one of the best fighters we've ever seen in the sport. The biggest fighter, for sure, that the sport's ever seen.

McGregor last fought at UFC 264 against Dustin Poirier when he broke his leg. His return is presumed to be at UFC 300 against Michael Chandler. However, conflicting reports emerged about the fight to happen later in 2024. Nevertheless, many, including Daniel Cormier, believe that McGregor will headline UFC 300 against “Iron” Michael Chandler.
