Joe Pyfer had gone through things where most people get mentally broken in the face of it. Yet, he chose to rise to the occasion and decide to break through all the generational trauma only to end up fighting in the biggest MMA organization in the world. In his second attempt to secure a UFC contract, Pyfer made a huge statement by defeating Osmon Diaz in the Week 1 of UFC’s Dana White Contender Series 2022. Later on, he delivered a second straight knockout at UFC Fight Night: Yadong vs Sandhagen.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani at the MMA Hour, MMA Legend Eddie Alvarez talks about having a glance of Pyfer‘s personal life.“Joe, I knew him since he was 4 years old, his dad used to bring him to the gym, his dad used to pit him against larger kids, the kids used to f**k Joe up sometimes and then his dad would get really mad at him and yell at him and scream… the story Joe is telling, you know, sadly, he dealt with a lot from a young age…” says Alvarez.

“And he was weird when he said he was weird and awkward and all that, he was a f**king weird kid! He’d walk up to other little kids and just say like ‘hey, I’m gonna choke you the f**k out,’ he acted like his dad even when he was 4… he was just saying what his dad would say to people…” continued Alvarez.

So far, 26-year-old Pyfer is 10-2 in his overall MMA career with a 2-1 record under the UFC banner. Watch this throwback interview from more than a week ago when Pyfer himself talks about coming out of the heart-wrenching story of facing and coming out of the traumatic cycle of abuse.

I ran away from home at 16. I was beaten like a grown man by my dad, especially in front of his wife. My mom was abusive as well, she was legally asked to stay away from me… There’s something that hurts when your mom hits you, more than when your dad does... I carried a lot of pain. The best way I can say it is that I was left in a room, one that I was left in when I was, sad, happy, depressed…never explained what feelings were. I homeschooled my entire life, I didn’t have my first friend till I was 14 years old,” said Pyfer.
