UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champ Amanda Nunes will have a new opponent for UFC 289. Julianna Pena was forced to withdraw from the bout due to an injury. The UFC president has already found a replacement for the defending champion.
Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena already had a lot of verbal fight before the fight, and now this latest news has shocked the MMA community. UFC president Dana White finally confirmed the new opponent for the current champ. Dana White also stated that Pena got an injury in her ribs during the training session and will not be able to compete at the upcoming event.
Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena’s rivalry had a 1-1 score, and it was time to close the trilogy on UFC 289. Now Amanda and MMA fans will have to wait a bit longer as Juliana Pena takes time to recover. The most anticipated fight for Julianna, as she was claiming that the Nunes was avoiding her for a rematch.
Now that she is injured, a new name is coming up from the No. 5 rank contender. Mexican fighter Irene Aldana will be the replacement for Julianna Pena. Irene will be facing Amanda Nunes in the June 10 PPV main event. Irena was also preparing for the rematch against Raquel Pennington, out of which the winner will be declared the No. 1 contender for the championship fight.
Fans didn’t like the new opponent for the champ Amanda Nunes
Dana White posted the news on social media “Unfortunately, she broke her ribs. She cannot compete,” Dana also said. “We have Irene Aldana who’s coming in, who won four of her last five, and three of those were finishes. We could have another Mexican world champion.” As Dana White posted the news regarding Amanda Nunes’s new opponent the fans started to give hate reactions.
Fans were not happy to see Irene get the title shot that early. Aldana won two previous fights but hasn’t been able to secure any notable wins recently. Since Irene was about to face Pennington for the No. 1 contender, many fans don’t agree with Dana White’s this decision.
It will be the biggest chance for Aldana, as she skipped one opponent and got the title shot without competing. Also for UFC 289, the co-main event is the rescheduled fight between Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush. There is already a lot of drama for this event, as one fight got replaced and one fight was rescheduled.
