The return of Ronda Rousey to the UFC remains a hot topic of discussion in the combat sports world. The former bantamweight champion never retired from the sport. After losing back-to-back bouts against Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, Rousey stepped away from the sport to pursue other interests. However, in recent days, the news of Ronda’s return to the UFC has become louder and louder.
Chelsea Chandler will fight Norma Dumont this weekend. She spoke about the return of Ronda Rousey at a pre-fight press event. Chelsea said, “I’ve been hearing Ronda is coming back. I’ve heard she’s coming back at 145. You never know. If I got out there and put on the performance I plan on putting (on), I’ll welcome her to 145. I think it would be a great fight.” (H/T MMA Junkie).
Recently, Miesha Tate revealed that no one could have beaten Amanda Nunes. The retirement of Nunes could lead other fighters to realize their dream of becoming a UFC champion. It made fans consider if Ronda returned due to the departure of her former opponent. There is no clear-cut contender in the women’s featherweight or bantamweight division to take the crown. Hence, Ronda Rousey could return to the UFC to regain her title.
Rousey left the UFC in 2017 and debuted in the WWE in 2018. She impressed everyone during his first run in the WWE. She had an awesome performance teaming up with Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania against Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. However, her performances and fan reaction have recently become lackluster, leading fans to speculate if she wants to return to the UFC.
Ronda Rousey was a top PPV attraction during her prime
Former bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey left the UFC in 2017 after losing to Amanda Nunes. However, still today, no female superstars have managed to emulate her PPV success in the company. Dominant fighters like Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko never came close to superstar status.
Valentina did not main event a PPV during her reign as the flyweight champion. On the other hand, Nunes had plenty of main events as the major PPV attraction. However, she did not sell PPVs like Ronda. Even with the UFC 289 PPV featuring her last fight, fans were more interested in seeing Charles Oliveira at the PPV.
It is safe to say that no female fighter could ever rise to the status of Ronda Rousey. She was the biggest star in the UFC before Conor McGregor made his presence known. She could shatter her records in the UFC if she returns as the rumors suggest.
