Former title challenger Gilbert Burns does not think Conor McGregor can win against the top five guys in the Welterweight division. After almost two years of inactivity, McGregor has returned to the spotlight. He has made claims about a Welterweight title shot if he can get past Michael Chandler. However, Burns believes McGregor cannot compete with the top five Welterweights.
Recently Burns spoke with Damon Martin of MMA Fighting about his fight with Jorge Masvidal and McGregor’s rumoured Welterweight title shot. He said, “The only thing he can do at 170 is make whoever is the champion rich. I hope it’s me, but if it’s Leon [Edwards], if it’s Colby [Covington], whoever it is, you are going to get a lot of money, but I don’t think it’s going to be a hard fight. He’s welcome to try, but I guarantee any guy in the top 5 will finish him inside three rounds. He is done.“
Gilbert Burns reacted coldly to how McGregor would fare in the Welterweight division. He will fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287. Burns is coming off a submission win over Neal Magny. Masvidal has lost his last three fights and will look to return to the winning column at UFC 287.

Conor McGregor has not fought since his devastating leg injury in 2021. He is filming TUF 31 opposite Michael Chandler, leading to a future fight. However, it remains to be seen if he gets a title shot at Welterweight or if he can hang in with the top Welterweight fighters.

Gilbert Burns hopes to fight Colby Covington before retirement

Top Welterweight contender Gilburt wants to fight one particular fighter before retirement. The Brazilian fighter wants to fight Colby “Chaos” Covington before he leaves the sport of MMA. Despite fighting against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287, he wants to face Colby in the future.

In an interview with MMA Junkie, Burns said, “He’s been smart. He sits out and fights Tyron Woodley and then relax, and then he fights for the title again. He then picks another guy that’s not in his prime coming from another loss, Masvidal. Then he wins and gets another title shot. He’s been smart. I hope that one day we can get this done.”
UFC is trying to book a title fight between Colby and Leon Edwards. Any desire of Burns to fight Colby will have to wait until UFC sorts out the fight between Colby and Leon.
