In the recent pre-fight media event, Deiveson Figueiredo expressed his interest in fighting the bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley. At first, he explained that he was focused on his upcoming fight with Rob Font and wanted to get this win. As such, he stated that he wanted to test his striking with the best in the bantamweight division. So, he mentioned he would love to get the opportunity to go against Sean O’Malley or Dominick Cruz. Here is what he said (through a translator):
I'm not looking at a title shot right now. I'm actually looking to win this fight against Rob Font, place myself better in the rankings, and see where it goes from there. Not only Sean O'Malley but also Dominic Cruz, somebody that I respect so much, I would love those two fights, if the UFC could perhaps give me this opportunity, I think it would be great fights."Deiveson Figueiredo (via X )
Deiveson Figueiredo was the former UFC flyweight champion. He defended the title once against Alex Perez and then drew his fight against Brandon Moreno, thereby retaining the title. Little did he know that he would face Moreno consecutively in his next three bouts, winning once and losing twice. As such, he lost the historical 4th fight to Moreno.
Then, he announced that he would move up to bantamweight citing the weight-cut was getting rough. At first, he was rumored to fight Dominick Cruz but that fight didn’t materialize.
‘God of War’ now faces a steep challenge in his move up to bantamweight in Rob Font. Font lost his previous bout devastatingly to Cory Sandhagen. So, he was looking to return to the winning column by beating Deiveson Figueiredo. However, Figueiredo has set eyes on fighting for the bantamweight gold against Sean O’Malley and looked confident.
Rob Font shares his gameplan to fight Deiveson Figueiredo
Rob Font welcomes Deiveson Figueiredo to the most stacked division in the UFC, the bantamweight division. Their fight goes down in the main card of UFC Fight Night, Austin. As such, Font shared his thoughts and game plan for beating the ‘God of War’.
While answering questions on media day, Rob Font acknowledged Deiveson Figueiredo as a tough challenge. As such, he believed that Figueiredo would be on the spot size-wise and strength-wise. However, Font mentioned that he had the reach advantage and would deploy a more technical gameplay. Here is what he said:
I think size-wise and strength-wise I think he's going to be right there. Obviously I do have the reach advantage...I'm taking him very seriously. I just want to be more technical, cleaner, more accurate. If I have to make it ugly, get in there with him, but that's like the last gameplan. Just be there and get real technical with him.Rob Font (via X)
Rob Font didn’t brush off Deiveson Figueiredo as a flyweight and took him seriously. As such, he believed that he could get the win. However, Font’s coming off a loss to Sandhagen. Likewise, ‘God of War’ is coming off a loss to Brandon Moreno. However, this fight would be in a new weight division for him. We would have to wait and watch whether the move up to bantamweight was fruitful for Figueiredo or not.
