Here’s how Nick Diaz prepared his brother Nate Diaz to have a captivating send off against Tony Ferguson
Nick helped Nate come up with a game plan to beat Ferguson
Nick Diaz and Nate Diaz may be the most famous brotherly duo in the modern era of MMA. While there have been the Shamrock brothers and the Nogueiras before them who have accomplished much more in the sport, none come as close to the fame Nick and Nate enjoy.
Nick has always been Nate’s primary trainer when push comes to shove and even after all these years he’s not scared to admit it is so. In his most recent fight, and what was supposed to be the last fight on his UFC contract, Nate needed Nick’s advice more than ever. Nate who was preparing to fight Khamzat Chimaev, had to reschedule and accept a fight with Tony Ferguson on a 24 hour notice.
This was due to Chimaev missing weight by a massive margin. However, a major problem then became Nate’s complete lack of a game plan for the fight against Ferguson. The night prior to the fight is when they studied tape on Ferguson, the “where” is interesting since it happened at a Mötley Crüe concert.
The pair then had to work it out among themselves and right before Nate was taped and ready to go, Nick ran some drills with his younger brother where he tried to emulate his unique and abrupt style of Ferguson. He did this by spinning around, and feinting elbows while Nate worked on countering while staying out of range.

Nick Diaz and how he paved the path for Nate Diaz to have a smoother career
Whatever Nick taught Nate, surely worked as he was able to not only win the fight via submission but also manage to go 4 rounds and not get a single cut to his face, a rarity in the Diaz world. Both Nick and Nate were seen celebrating the win and both brothers finally being released from the clutches of the UFC.
Nate Diaz originally found out about MMA when he started following his elder brother to MMA gyms. Since that early age, Nick has been the primary guiding light in Nate’s professional career. When the WEC was purchased by Zuffa, Nate had the option to join up on the fourth season of The Ultimate Fighter.
It was Nick who advised his younger brother against that and instead, asked him to join up in the fifth season. That’s exactly what Nate fid and he reaped the rewards as he walked out of the season as the Ultimate Winner and a fan favorite.
It is also from Nick that Nate received his second most defining personality trait, being an ardent cannabis advocate. The elder Diaz in particular fought and won a claim against the NSAC where they looked to penalize him heavily along with a three year suspension for testing positive for marijuana after his fight against Anderson Silva.
