How many times has Charles Oliveira missed weight in his MMA career?

Charles Oliveira misses weight at UFC 274

The lightweight champion does not have a name right now. If this statement made any sense to you, then you would probably know what has been going on in the ever-so-interesting lightweight division of the UFC.

After Khabib vacated the lightweight throne, the title was waiting for its next heir. However, one of the people least expected to inherit and defend the lightweight division’s cream has done just that. Brazilian Charles Oliveira TKO’d Michael Chandler to win the vacant belt last year, and defended it against Dustin Poirier, and then beat Justin Gaethje (though he didn’t retain his belt due to missed weight).

The logical question to be asked, then, is – Is this a repetition of past events by Oliveira? The answer is a yes and a no, because, in his UFC career, Oliveira has missed weight a staggering 6 times. But the catch is that most of the times that he missed weight, he was fighting in the featherweight division, and that all his success has come at the 155lb mark, where he doesn’t seem to be sacrificing performance.

The most significant violation of the sanctioned rules was in his bout against Ricardo Lamas, where he came in 10 pounds overweight instead of the usual 145 pounds. His most recent weight miss (before the one at UFC 274) was against Jim Miller, with the Brazilian coming in 2 pounds heavy.

Coming into UFC 274, the narrative around the fight was set in a bipolar fashion – that is, fans could not decisively vouch for either fighter winning the bout in their predictions. However, chaos ensued as Charles Oliveira came in at 155.5 pounds, thereby missing weight by half a pound! That didn’t dampen his spirits, as he marched Justin Gaethje forward, mounted his back, and finished him early.

The words of Daniel Cormier will remain evergreen, with him saying, “Who is going to stop THIS Charles Oliveira, man?” By this, he was likely referring to Charles Oliveira’s catalysis from being a talented submission artist who lost the odd fight every now and again, to one of the best to ever do it, at 155 pounds.

Despite what the fans might call it, Oliveira takes on Islam Makachev at UFC 280 for the vacant lightweight belt. Makhachev is Khabib’s heir elect, having trained with the Dagestani star since a young age. And the likeness to Khabib shows in the early betting odds for the match-up. As of now, he is the -155 favourite.

Those are quite the steep odds, given that Charles Oliveira has finished some of the big names of the lightweight division – that being, Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. Whatever be the case, the two will come to fight on October 22nd, and the main card being especially packed as well, from top to bottom; makes the Abu Dhabi event a no-miss.
