Ian Machado Garry has little to no fans left in his corner. This resulted from his wife, Layla Anna Lee‘s 2010 publication How to be a WAG. While it was a satire, fight fans jumped the gun on deliberately berating the couple. Following suit of Sean Strickland and Colby Covington, they even prompted a victim status of celebrity ensnaring on Garry. Ahead of his fight against Geoff Neal at UFC 298, ‘The Future’ talked about his personal life.
Ian Garry pulled out last from UFC 296 due to a supposed case of pneumonia. At the time, he was concerned for the safety of his family amid the controversy. He also criticized Sean Strickland and Colby Covington for the unwanted attention he received. This is what Garry said:
There’s a line on what you say and what you do, and it’s not trash to call my wife a pedophile, or say my kid isn’t even mine. That’s not trash talk. That’s abuse...... The two main culprits are fu**ing Colby and Sean Strickland. Colby bringing up Leon [Edwards’] dad and Sean just being negative toward every single person possible.
‘Tarzan’ had tormented Garry on his supposed victim status. Strickland’s comment came due to Garry marrying a 40-year-old “gold-digger” wife. Meanwhile, welterweight peer Colby Covington fired vile shots at his wife with sexual innuendos at UFC 296 pre-fight presser. Garry believed these two represented a class of trash-talkers who overtly went beyond the limit and spirit of sportsmanship.
Accordingly, Garry has vowed to dominate Covington for talking trash about his wife. That is, after UFC 298. Garry was set to fight Neal at UFC 292, but the latter pulled out. Garry went on to fight and beat late replacement Neil Magny instead. It remains to be seen if Garry could defeat Neal and fight Covington in the future.
Ian Machado Garry says Sean Strickland is not the voice MMA fans should listen to
The promotion is back for its second pay-per-view of 2024. With a stacked fight card, UFC 298 takes place Saturday at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. A grudge match between rising welterweight prospect Ian Garry and Geoff Neal takes shape on the card.
Before Garry and Neal fight this Saturday, the duo attended the Fight Week Media Day. Amidst many controversies, Garry said he saw online hate as a sign of UFC career success. However, he drew the line at interpersonal attacks that range to immediate family. Garry talked about his family’s negative impact due to the trash talk from Strickland. He also said fight fans should not consider Strickland a good influence. Check out what Garry said below:
Speaking to The MMA Hour‘s Ariel Helwani, Garry had recently vowed to give Strickland a hiding in the octagon, irrespective of weight class. Only time will tell if such a face-off would even take form. For now, Garry has kept his focus on the welterweight division.
