Ian Machado Garry has a lot riding on UFC 298. The welterweight standouts’ bout against Geoff Neal will not only boost his stats but hopefully also fan perceptions. Garry has recently caught much flack for self-promotional tendencies and interpersonal squabble with peers. His continued association with his 40-year-old wife’s previous partner had earned much beratement as well. However, there are aspects of it he still chooses to stand by.
It all started with his wife, Layla Anna Lee‘s 2010 publication: How to be a WAG. The British Sports presenter’s satire piece earned much backlash on Garry being a victim of ensnaring. Concurrently, him employing Anna-Lee’s ex-husband, Richard Cullen as his nutritionist did not sit well within the combat sports bubble. However, here’s how he defended the notion to Shakiel Mahjouri of CBSSports:
I don't want to be a wedge between my wife and her ex-husband and her kid...No, I'm a bigger man than that, I understand that there's a child in all of this and he deserves to be prioritised.Ian Garry via CBS Sports
Cullen is a performance nutritionist for Garry. The co-creator of Layla Ltd, he covered UFC 5RY on UFC FightPass, Layla’s Occasionally Unbiased Football Show on NBC Sports, and MyEPL on Eleven Sports. They have a son, Lucas, Hence, Garry chooses not to disrupt the bond Cullen has with his son. The Irishman models himself to be the ‘disruptor‘ of the promotion; much like Conor McGregor. But contrary to belief, personal bounds are where he draws the line.
While Garry is no stranger to trash talks himself, there are limits he would not cross. Like the vile personal attacks on his wife and calling upon the legitimacy of his kid. He scorns such rise of insensitive trash talks in the MMA sphere, that affects the closest on their radar. This seems ironic and hypocritical to fans, as his comments about Neil Magny and his treatment of his children almost resulted in Magny losing custody of his kids. The said comments were made by Garry during the lead-up to UFC 292.
Ian Machado Garry weighs in on pitfalls of his middle name
Ian Garry faces Geoff Neal next a UFC 298, taking place Saturday at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The 13-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC rising welterweight has an uphill task ahead. But Garry’s ability to generate interest and spark debates supersedes any other peer as of late.
This is a deliberate reproach from his PR team, including his wife, accomplished English television presenter Layla Anna-Lee. Layla Machado Garry’s ex-husband is serving as his nutritionist, which has led to speculative sexual innuendos about their association.
Machado is his wife’s maiden name on her mother’s side of the family. According to some Irish traditions one has to take up a third name as such upon marriage. Veteran Chael Sonnen had deliberated on this about a year ago, on his ‘Beyond The Fight‘ podcast.
There’s a reason Garry includes it. Speaking to CBSSports, he said that he adopted the surname so his stepson and son could have the same surname. According to Garry, this would allow the two brothers to form a strong bond and prevent disharmony.
Garry`s readiness to call out adversaries and to engage in verbal sparring with all and sundry attracts unwanted attention. But Garry doesn’t want to change his approach. Speaking during UFC 298 Media Day, he said he saw online hate as a sign of UFC career success.
From getting kicked out of Leon Edwards‘ Team Renegade gym, to mocking rival Vicente Luque’s religious ceremonials. In the past few months, fans haven’t taken kindly to his methodologies of trading barbs. However, his diligence towards both his kids, at the cost of defamation even, is sure to curry some substantial favor towards the Irish fighter.
