“Just got LUCKY” – Islam Makhachev discredits Leon Edwards’ win as ‘FLUKE’ over Kamaru Usman at UFC 278
Islam Makhachev on Leon Edwards' win at UFC 278
Unlike a lot of fans, Lightweight title challenger, Islam Makhachev does not see the newly crowned Welterweight champion, Leon Edwards having a lengthy title run. The Dagestani believes that the newly crowned champion’s win was just sheer luck.
Kamaru Usman was defending his Welterweight crown at UFC 278 against Leon Edwards. This fight was a rematch from their first meeting in 2015. The P4P king was the favourite going into the fight as many didn’t think Rocky was a threat to the undefeated champion.
After starting the fight on a very good note and winning the round. Rocky started to fade away in later rounds against Usman’s pressure. With a final minute left in the fight and Rocky seemingly looking lost people thought it was going to be another title defence for the champion.
However, his dominance and 15-fight winning streak came to a crashing halt after Rocky pulled out one of the biggest upsets in UFC history. Edwards knocked out cold the P4P king with a head kick at the very last minute of the fight to snatch the 170lbs title away from him.

The Dagestani discredited the newly crowned champion and believes that the former champion Usman will take the belt back in the trilogy with ease. He stated, “Edwards [got] lucky because he (Usman) beat him all five rounds, almost, First round, he (Edwards) take him down, take his back, but other rounds he (Usman) beat him very easy, take him down many times and smashed him there.”
He further added, “When they’re going to fight again in rematch, 100 percent I think Kamaru is going to beat him … Edwards have same problem, always with wrestling guys.”
