Islam Makhachev met his backup fighter, Alexander Volkanovski, who also happens to be the pound-for-pound number one ahead of UFC 280.

The excitement is through the roof for the upcoming UFC 280 pay-per-view event. The main event fight between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev has stirred a lot of interest in this PPV event that is set to take place at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi this weekend.

The lightweight title is so precious that even the featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski is ready to fly all the over to the middle east and serve as purely just a backup fighter. Makhachev, who is all set to fight for the belt this weekend, ran into the main event backup fighter, Volkanovski on media day earlier today.

“Honestly, I met Volkanovski downstairs, he’s a short guy. I ask him why you need to cut weight right now? But if I beat Volkanovski people are going to say [Islam beat a short guy] but people are always going to talk,” said Makhachev talking about his encounter with Volkaovski ahead of UFC 280.

“I want to fight with Charles, and I hope he’s going to make weight. But it doesn’t matter. This camp, I trained so hard, it doesn’t matter who is going to be there. Saturday night, I need someone,” added Islam Makhachev on his media day.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Volkanovski gave his predictions for the upcoming fight. The Australian champ leans towards the Dagestani to either get a late finish or a decision victory to become the champ on Saturday night.

“I think if I had to lean towards someone it would have to be Islam. No disrespect to Charles because Charles has proved himself, but I just think stylistically that’s maybe how I see it going. Either late finish, whether it’s kimura, armbar…or decision,” said Volkanovski in his prediction video.
