“I know how that book ends”- Israel Adesanya offers his take on a Robert Whittaker trilogy fight

Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker at UFC 271

Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker first met at UFC 243. Whittaker, of Australia, entered the ring as the undisputed middleweight champion, while Adesanya, of New Zealand, had the interim championship. It was regarded as the most important bout in Oceanic mixed martial arts history, as well as one of the best fights possible at the time. That fight was clearly won by Adesanya, who stunned Whittaker with a second-round left hook.

In the rematch, he regained his middleweight title by unanimous decision over the previous champion Whittaker. At UFC 271, Whittaker was denied a crack at the UFC middleweight title, with champion Adesanya winning by unanimous decision. Many people were unhappy with the decision, claiming that the rivalry was incomplete and calling for a trilogy.

Adesanya was asked about a possible trilogy bout with Whittaker during a joint press conference with other Oceanian talents Alexander Volkanovski and Kai Kara-France. He stated, “Bobby, he’s a great fighter. He’s a great fighter, I’ll give that to him. But I know how that book ends. I’ve read that book twice already. First time was a quick read, second time was a little bit longer, but I mean, he’s probably gonna be at the top for a while. But if we fight again, I know how that book ends so that’s why I’m excited about this next fight. Some new blood, someone I’ve never fought before.”

Adesanya has defeated nearly every contender in the division, including a pair of victories over former champion Robert Whittaker in his most recent bout. During his stint as champion, Adesanya has also defeated Paulo Costa, Marvin Vettori, and Yoel Romero. Cannonier has long been a potential opponent for Adesanya, and the clash will finally take place in July.
