Dricus Du Plessis became the first South African UFC champion at UFC 297. The victory over Sean Strickland for the middleweight division came via split decision. Strickland used his jab very effectively in the fight. However, Du Plessis kept the pressure throughout the fight. The fight was extremely close, and UFC CEO Dana White thought Strickland had won the fight. Nonetheless, Du Plessis called out former champion Israel Adesanya after the victory.

Adesanya responded to the callout with a social media post on his official channels. Du Plessis and Adesanya already have beef and an interesting backstory for the UFC to build upon. Adesanya is a master of fight promotion, and he sowed seeds for a blockbuster fight with his recent social media post. This is what Adesanya tweeted.

This arc in my story was written long ago. Our paths are destined to cross again. Stay tuned for the next episode, thanks for watching. We Write History.

Adesanya posted three videos along with the tweet. In the first video, he showed a slight interaction with Du Plessis in Thailand. Du Plessis was sparring with Alexander Volkanovski when Adesanya inadvertently touched the South African. The second video showed the face of the duo at UFC 290. Moreover, in the third video, Adesanya self-promoted himself as one of the best middleweights ever.

In addition to Adesanya, the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev also showed his interest in fighting Du Plessis. However, Du Plessis does not seem interested in it. Moreover, Du Plessis has an interest in becoming a double champion as he hinted interest to fight Alex Pereira for the light heavyweight title.

The Israel Adesanya – Dricus Du Plessis beef explained

The beef between Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis started after the statements Du Plessis made about his African heritage. After his victory over Darren Till, Du Plessis claimed to be more ‘African’ than the then-African champions of the UFC- Israel Adesanya, Kamaru Usman, and Francis Ngannou.

What Du Plessis meant was that the aforementioned names did not reside in Africa, but he did. Adesanya did not like it one bit and attributed Du Plessis’ heritage to colonialism. The boiling point of the beef was at UFC 290. At UFC 290, Du Plessis finished Robert Whittaker against all odds.

Israel Adesanya was cage-side for the event, and he went inside the octagon and faced off with Du Plessis. The face-off saw Adesnay hurling racial slurs at Du Plessis. The UFC planned the face-off as a segway to a middleweight title fight at UFC 293. However, Du Plessis injured his foot, and Sean Strickland replaced him. Strickland upset Adesanya at UFC 293.
