Jared Cannonier faced Sean Strickland at the main event of UFC Vegas 66 and the fight turned out to be extremely entertaining. Both fighters went into the match with a loss and a hope of getting a much-needed win. Before the fight, both looked confident and it was visible inside the octagon. The fight was extremely close however, Cannonier edged Strickland with a split decision.

Throughout the fight, Strickland and Cannonier participated in striking exchanges without any hesitation. Strickland used his incredible jabbing skills to maintain distance and attack from distance. He was able to do that cleverly in the initial rounds and won two of them. However, as the fight progressed Cannonier put his legs on the gas and successfully landed several combinations, and was able to get the points. He was also destroying Strickland’s legs with those nasty leg kicks from outside. 

Cannonier’s strikes were brutal and it was enough to cut open Strickland’s face as the fighter got hit by various clean punches. At the end of the fifth round, Cannonier announced the winner via split decision.

Jared‘s octagon return against Sean Strickland turned out way closer than the fighter would have expected. However, he managed to give more damage to the fighter and outscore Strickland on the points. 

During the post-fight interview, Cannonier mentioned that he had always planned to take Strickland’s legs first and then systematically work his way up to the head and that’s exactly what he did. When asked about his future fight, Cannonier revealed that he wants another title shot as soon as possible. According to the fighter, anyone who will take him closer to the Middleweight title or even the title shot itself he’s ready to go next time. 

He said: “I would definitely like another title shot. Sooner rather than later but you know, at this point I’m ranked number 3, I just beat number 6. I believe Whittaker and Costa are scheduled to fight next year. So anybody above me that will give me that will get me to the title fight or the title fight is what we are shooting for.”

The middleweight division has gone through some significant changes in the last few months and there is a shift in the throne. It is going to be interesting what is going to take place next year.
