“Next time I will be better,” Jiri Prochazka remains critical of performance despite capturing UFC gold in a title fight for the ages
Jiri Prochazka
We have a new UFC Light-heavyweight champion and his name is Jiri Prochazka, the man who became a UFC champion within just his third UFC bout. What’s even more shocking is that Prochazka defeated the former champion, Glover Teixeira at UFC 275 main event, in Teixeira’s specialisation of the ground game in MMA to submit the oldest first-time UFC champion in the last 30 seconds of the final round of the fight that will be remembered for ages as one of the greatest title fights in UFC history.
The overall card of UFC 275 delivered more than expected and for that reason, every fighter got awarded the bonus. The main card opened with Australian prospect Jack Della Maddalena having his 12th straight career win when he finishes Ramazan Emeev in the opening round via a fight-changing body shot followed by punches and followed by that, Jake Matthews shuts the Andre Fialho hype train via his spectacular striking clinic leading to a TKO victory.
Zhang Weili retires Joanna Jedrzejczyk via second-round brutal back fist knockout in their rematch that delivered equally as their first fight. At last before the main event, Valentina Shevchenko becomes the women’s champion with the most title defences in UFC history as she defends her flyweight title for the seventh time straight in a close fight against Taila Santos.
Jiri Prochazka says RNC choke came out naturally in execution over Glover Teixeira at UFC 275
In the Octagon interview, Jiri Prochazka reacts to his performance against Glover Teixeira and quite surprisingly, he is not impressed as he stays self-critical in reflection on his performance. The reason for this might be that up until the submission finish, Teixeira was winning the fight in the majority as per the judges’ score card.
“In the fight, I thought I will show the best performance. Sorry for that and next time I will be better,” says Prochazka.
Commenting on the execution of the submission, a very impressive rear-naked choke over a grappling phenome like Teixeira, Prochazka said “I f**ked up my left hand, and the choke, that came naturally. I just watched the moment, what opportunity is before me.”
What do you make of Jiri Prochazka’s attitude to remain a critic of himself despite overcoming adversity to become a world champion? How far do you see Prochazka will rule the division, do you see him getting down immediately or going on to become one of the greatest light-heavyweight fighters ever? Even though Teixeira will continue with his career and keep going to get back to a title fight, Prochazka has a line of opponents besides the former champ. Who do you think is next for the title shot?
We have the former champion Jan Blachowicz coming off a not-so-strong yet valid win over Alexandar Rakic. Then we have light-heavyweights Anthony Smith and Magomed Ankalaev going to clash against each other at UFC 277. In future, the winner of this fight will definitely have to head over for a title shot. Who do you think will be more deserving Blachowicz or the winner of the Smith-Ankalaev clash that is anticipated as a banger?
