“Wasn’t writing N****R S*** in India” Joe Rogan and Dave Chappelle argue recent Controversies Should Not tarnish Gandhi’s incredible legacy

Gandhi's legacy has been called into question in recent years in both the western and eastern worlds

Dave Chappelle and Joe Rogan don’t wish to see Gandhi through a modern lens but through the time he operated. This is why he is willing to overlook some of the more serious criticisms of racism laid on Gandhi in the past few years.

Evergreen comedian Chappelle is a philosopher first and has always been so starting with his earliest comedy specials. Joe Rogan admires this quality in a person and hence it’s no wonder the two have been long-term friends.

During an episode of the JRE podcast, Chappelle and Rogan were discussing the legacy of Gandhi in light of some of his racist writings coming out into the mainstream. However, Dave believes a reactionary view on the topic will never give us the full picture.

Chappelle has gained flak for suggesting that we should not judge historical figures under today’s lenses

He has the argument to back up his point. He argued that since these writings were from the time he was a lawyer in South Africa, it was not a choice but an obligation to be racist. “To be a great lawyer(in apartheid South Africa) you had to be a good racist, ” said Dave as he explained that in order to survive and progress through a racist system, one would have to become a racist themselves.

Joe would then shift the topic to the Mahatma’s alleged perversions with him sleeping with his nieces in order to “tempt himself. “ Dave Chappelle would respond to this, not knowing of the allegations calling him, “The Evel Knievel of Pu***”

“He like to lay down and get hard on, what the fuss” said Joe to calm down the situation as Dave revealed that he will always first be someone who fought white supremacy in his country.

“I hate the debunking of great legacies, imagine how the whites might feel if they tore down a civil war statue, this kind of thing to me is that,” said Dave as he explain. As Joe tried to reiterate that the worst allegations against the activist were that of perversion, Dave explained how his legacy will always rise above that.

“I’m not trying to pass a value judgment on any of this, what I’m saying is he did expel the British peacefully which was unprecedented in the world, a peaceful expulsion of oppressors, ” as he corrected Rogan on his comment about peaceful protests as Gandhi framed his fight as civil disobedience or the idea that “I will not be part of my own oppression”
