There have been many instances of Joe Rogan being put on full blast by the MMA community for his ill timed interviews right after a fighter has been brutally defeated – the interviews of Conor McGregor and Daniel Cormier jump to mind. However, in the instance that will be explained below, Rogan caught a fighter’s attempts at saving face on live television.

Stipe Miocic is widely regarded as one of the best heavyweights to have ever entered the UFC octagon, and for good reason – in 2016, he faced a juggernaut of a man in Dutch fighter Alistair Overeem, and was able to TKO him to get the victory. In the process, Miocic escaped a tight guillotine choke from Overeem.

Talking about his loss after the fight, the Dutch fighter said, “I got him in a guillotine choke, and I clearly felt the tap.” To this, Joe Rogan replied, “You had him hurt, you grabbed a hold of his neck, where do you see the tap? That looks like he is trying to fight his way through your arms. Well, it didn’t look like a tap to us.

Joe Rogan’s rebuttal was corroborated by the UFC showing the replay of the exact moment in question, twice – the result of which was very clear, there didn’t seem to be any tap. The audience didn’t like Overeem not owning up either, and showed their disapproval through their boos and jeers.

Despite the obviously uncomfortable situation, Alistair Overeem’s legacy remains unfettered in the UFC. However, talking of legacy, it also must be added as a caution that “The Demolition Man” had failed his drug test, going into his UFC 146 fight against Junior Dos Santos.

However, his exploits in the cage still deserve to be pointed out. Making his debut all the way back in 1999, Overeem spent time in promotions like Pride FC and Strikeforce, before making his inevitable debut in the toughest promotions of them all – the UFC.

In a stint that spanned 10 years, from 2011 to 2021, Overeem was able to capture the imagination of fans as he beat the likes of Frank Mir, Junior dos Santos, Fabricio Werdum and Brock Lesnar, from whom he wrested away the title. He will be remembered in the UFC as a complete mauler – a tribulation for any man who dared to take him head on.
