UFC color commentator and podcaster, Joe Rogan recently did a podcast with Shane Gillis and Matt McCusker. There he made fresh statements about the controversial phase of Bud Light last year. Here is what happened:
The recent JRE 2098 episode started with a discussion about Bud Light. Joe Rogan addressed the entire controversy and how Bud Light made its comeback after facing significant backlash. Rogan said:
I think it was an important moment in culture where people realized. Like you know there is consequences for certain things. And some people, they like a guy like Kid Rock can shoot your brand you got real problems, that demographic.Joe Rogan via JRE
Back in April 2023, Kid Rock posted a video on social media. There he shot up cases of Bud Light with a machine gun and yelled “F*** Bud Light”. The video was a protest against the ad campaign, which featured transgender TikTok influencer, Dylan Mulvaney. The campaign was for its Bud Light Easy Carry Contest during the NCAA’s March Madness. Bud Light faced significant backlash for the collaboration. Rock said the video was marketing to his people who drank light beer. He said it was to make a statement that a lot of people were not happy with it.
Even during the entire chaos last year, Joe Rogan took a firm stand in his support for Bud Light. Rogan particularly emphasized its appeal to blue-collar drinkers and football fans. Despite criticism, he defended his choice to drink Bud Light, triggering backlash from some fans.
Bud Light’s partnership with Shane Gillis and the UFC
In 2023, Bud Light lost its top spot as a domestic beer due to controversy. Bud Light’s U.S. retail sales were down 26% compared to the same period in 2022 due to the boycott over its collaboration with Dylan Mulvaney.
Bud Light’s rebranding effort recently involved partnering with comedian Shane Gillis. The company aims to win back conservative consumers by teaming up with Gillis who is known for his controversial views. Meanwhile, last year Anheuser-Busch announced that Bud Light will become the UFC’s “official beer partner” starting January 2024.
ESPN reported that the deal was the biggest sponsorship deal in UFC history. UFC CEO, Dana White stated that the partnership was a result of shared values and brand alignment.
