“She just wanted me to stop fighting”- Ketlen Vieira defends judges’ decision at UFC Vegas 55 by pointing out the flaw in Holly Holm’s game-plan
Ketlen Vieira vs Holly Holm
At UFC Vegas 55, Ketlen Vieira secured another huge victory, when the 30-year-old “Fenomeno” secured a split decision victory over former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm in the main event.
Vieira is now 7-2 in her UFC career and has made her way into the top 3 rankings amongst the UFC’s women bantamweight. Her next fight should likely happen to be against the winner of the title fight rematch happening at UFC 277 between the champion Julianna Pena and the challenger Amanda Nunes.
Vieira and Holm went head to head in a super close fight against each other but to the public eye, it seemed like Holm was the one that was supposed to win the fight due to her clinch control of almost 10 minutes and her volume of strikes. Only time can tell what’s next for Holm as she is already 40-years old and is going to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Famer next month.
“It’s something that works and he knows” – Ketlen Vieira explains her coach’s behavior in between the rounds
In the post-fight interview, Holly said the judges messed up the scorecard, and she clearly did enough to get the win. Vieira reacted to this and explained why the decision went in her favor. She said, “I think she was doing more of an ‘antigame,’ we use that term for soccer. That’s what she was doing, she was basically trying to neutralize me.” (H/T MMAFighting)
Vieira added, “She was just pressing me against the cage but nothing was happening, she just wanted me to stop fighting and I think that the judges actually saw that.” (H/T MMAFighting)
Many criticized her coach for lashing out at her in between the rounds, but Vieira claimed its a normal practice in their gym, and that’s how she receives her motivation, “Not just in the fights, but also in the gym, he’s always like, ‘You’re losing, you’re losing,’” Vieira said. “‘Listen, she’s got this, you’re trailing it.’ And yes, it’s something that he uses to propel us to actually win and to find more, to actually go for a fight, to look for a fight, to look for a win. So it’s something that works and he knows he needs to actually use that kind of approach.” (H/T MMAFighting)
