UFC veteran and former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has had one of the most illustrious careers in MMA history. He rose through the ranks quickly and won the UFC lightweight championship. He went on to defeat many top contenders and absolute warriors and absolutely dominated them in the octagon. His last fight against Justin Gaethje is an example of such a performance.
Nurmagomedov recently appeared on the PBD podcast hosted by $200 million dollar worth entrepreneur Patrick Bet-David. He was asked by David about the hardest hitter faced by him in his career. Nurmagomedov replied by saying “I think it was Justin Gaethje he hit like a truck. When he hit me it was right uppercut and left hook were his best punches. I was like brother is this everything that you have”. He revealed that he spoke about this with his opponent during the fight.
Nurmagomedov revealed that he told Gaethje that his punches were weak due to jetlag. The Eagle told Gaethje that he understands his situation and he went through it too during the first week of his stay in Abu Dhabi. Nurmagomedov had been staying in Abu Dhabi for a month and Gethje was at the peak of his jetlag. He also spoke about how MMA is not only a skill-based and also a mental sport.
Both combatants delivered powerful blows in a tight and thrilling battle. In the second round, Nurmagomedov managed to pull Gaethje down and apply a triangle choke, which made his opponent tap out. For the third time, Nurmagomedov successfully defended his title, putting up a commanding display. Following the bout, he declared his retirement from mixed martial arts, citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

It is always the responsibility of the coach to look after the fighter during training camp and tell them what is best for them. Nurmagomedov’s coach Javier Mendez has been like a brother to him and has always looked out for his best interests. He has trained Khabib for a very long time and was worried for him when he was facing difficulties during the Gaethje training camp.
Mendez revealed that Nurmagomedov had faced a broken toe and was sick during the camp. He revealed that Nurmagomedov was looking very sick and advised him to cancel the fight or move up the date. Mendez revealed that Nurmagomedov had broken his toe four weeks before the fight which made him think that it was imminent that he would pull out. Nurmagomedov then reassured him saying that even though his toe is broken his mental fortitude is not.
Mendez revealed that this made him believe in Nurmagomedov’s ability and mindset. Nurmagomedov’s focus and commitment to winning every match and dominating his opponent have cemented him as one of the GOATs. Fans will be looking forward to seeing Nurmagomedov make a potential return soon.
