Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s retirement sent shockwaves through the UFC. Despite his remarkable success and undefeated record, Khabib chose to step away from the sport. He had vowed not to compete without his father by his side, who had tragically passed away. The recent comments from his cousin, Usman Nurmagomedov, have ignited fans’ curiosity.
During a recent interview with ESPN’s Marc Raimondi, Usman Nurmagomedov spoke of Khabib’s character. Usman portrayed Khabib as a man of unwavering integrity. Umar said, “…I text him every day, like ‘Hey, when will you come back?’ He tells me, ‘Hey, leave me alone.” He emphasized his commitment to keeping his word, regardless of personal gain. Expanding on this, Usman Nurmagomedov boldly declared, “And I don’t think he’s gonna be coming back like a coach – corner or even he doesn’t come to watch fights in the arena…” These words, spoken by a close family member, are proof of Khabib’s resolute commitment to his decisions.
This has left fans contemplating whether Khabib Nurmagomedov will ever return to the UFC stage. He has previously coached Dagestani prodigies like Usman and Islam Makhachev. Khabib was also present as a cornerman in 2021 during the fights of his fellow Dagestani fighters.
However, he decided to step away from coaching right before UFC 284. This was Islam Makhachev’s fight against Alexander Volkanovski, who was making his debut in the lightweight division for an attempt at Islam’s title. As such, Khabib is likely not to be present for Islam Makhachev’s highly anticipated rematch against Charles Oliveira at UFC 294.
