Leon Edwards shocked the world last weekend and kudos to an empowering woman behind the new UFC welterweight champion. Edwards in his last fight did the unthinkable when he knocked out former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman out cold in the last round of the fight that he was losing heavily at the main event of UFC 278. Edwards is now on a 10-fight winning streak, replacing Usman with the longest active winning streak in the welterweight division right now.

For Edwards to do something that even Colby Covington, Jorge Masvidal and Gilbert Burns couldn’t do with Covington and Masvidal getting their chances twice, he has shut all the doubters who raised fingers at his competency throughout the pandemic period. Edwards is the second UFC champion out of Britain and Jamaica respectively after UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping and UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.

In an interview at the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Edwards talks about the fight week of UFC 278, his thoughts on Nate Diaz vs Khamzat Chimaev, the impact of fighting in a high altitude place like Utah, his mindset right before knocking out Usman, his life story of coming so far and much more. In the midst of all, Edwards remembered his dear birth giver and what happened after he spoke about his mother might make you shed a few tears.

“There’s all in [my] house, like my mom, my son, all watching the fight together, you know and yeah, now it’s hard for me, it’s difficult for me to see my mom in tears because I know how much it means to us you know and it’s hard to put into words. When you make your mom proud, that’s every son’s dream is to make your mom proud and I did that you know I made her proud...

Even though it was we came from nothing, she got me involved in MMA at the age of 17, just to keep me out of trouble and I made her proud you know…” says Leon after which the champion starts crying heavily for a few seconds.

What did you make of these thoughts by Edwards about his mother’s significance in his life and the birth of his MMA career? There are many such relations in MMA that always stand out. When the family becomes the source of your power to achieve greatness, there is nothing more fulfilling than that for it brings not just a sense of achievement for your own self but a sense of justice to those who always believed in you. A greater purpose is served when a man serves in his work while keeping the family in his mind, more so, his mother!
