“It’s a F**K YOU” – Luke Rockhold reveals why he smeared blood all over Paulo Costa’s face at UFC 278
Luke Rockhold and Paulo Costa blood
Luke Rockhold gave MMA fans one of the best moments in the octagon of all time. The former middleweight champion took on a monster in Paulo Costa and ended his career with one of the greatest wars ever. However, the fight ended in a very “gory” way as Rockhold began to smear all the blood from his face onto the Brazilian.
UFC 278 was undoubtedly saved by Luke Rockhold and Paulo Costa. Up until their fight, which was held at the co-main event, the pay-per-view did not deliver. However, Luke and Costa took all the weight on their shoulder and put on an all-timer fight for the fans sitting at the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. Heading into the fight, very few would have guessed that Rockhold was going to hang up his gloves.
Rockhold was very confident heading into the fight and was not scared one bit about facing the dangerous Costa. Despite the exhaustion, bleeding and multiple devastating blows to the face during the fight, Rockhold held his own against the youngster. In the final round, Luke smeared blood all over Costa’s face when he got on top of the Brazilian. The commentators called that moment to be “twisted and so Luke Rockhold“. Never had anyone seen a fighter do that to his opponent inside the octagon.

“I was there to kill or be killed” – Luke Rockhold explains the amazing moment from UFC 278
Following his amazing performance, Luke appeared on the latest episode of the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani and shed some light on his retirement fight. Ariel was curious like many of us to know what went to Luke’s mind when he decided to smear all that blood over Costa’s face in the end. “That’s just a ‘f**k you,'” said Rockhold on the MMA Hour show.
“You know when someone’s point fighting and someone’s going for the kill. That’s the difference. I felt like I was there to kill or be killed and he was out there trying to get by,” added Luke on the difference between his and Costa’s performance that night. Though Luke might not have a problem with his choice of action, the Brazilian middleweight was “disgusted” by that act and so were many fans who watched it live.
But the fight surely had everything that you’d expect in a UFC fight and more. There couldn’t have been a better way for Luke to shut his haters and also end his glorious career. What were your reactions to Luke and Paulo’s blood-smearing moment?
