MMA’s biggest superstar, Conor McGregor suffered a devastating leg injury in his last fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. This happened back in July 2021, and since then The Irishman is recovering from the injury while eyeing a return inside the octagon.

During rehabilitation, McGregor gained a significant amount of weight, and now he’s looking to come back to the welterweight division to try and become the first ‘three-division champ.’ McGregor dropped out of USADA’s testing pool while recovering, and now he’s trying to exploit a loophole in the rules and regulations to bag an early return.

While many raised an eyebrow over McGregor’s attempt, UFC veteran Matt Brown isn’t blaming ‘The Notorious One’ for anything. Talking on The Fighter vs. The Writer podcast, he said, “I think we all know why (McGregor removed himself from the testing pool) but it’s just a loophole. We can all exploit it. Any of us could exploit it. I don’t think most of us make the money he has to afford that much time off, right?”

Brown added, “He’s following the rules. You can’t hate on him. He’s following the f****ng rules.” While the exact status of McGregor’s return remains uncertain, it is pretty obvious that he’s going to shake up the division, and nobody would be surprised to see him compete for the title soon.

Matt Brown is surprised that no other fighter took advantage of this loophole in the past

Brown has been in the game for long, and he remembers the time when USADA wasn’t in the picture. He remembers his fight against Johny Hendricks, and Brown is absolutely certain that Henricks was juiced up to the gills in that fight.

He is actually very surprised that none of the fighters actually took advantage of this loophole in the past, he said, “It’s kind of always surprised me nobody has exploited this to a greater extent where they fight once a year, pull out of the pool straight away. Do six months of steroids, six months of testing, fight again. It surprised me no one has done this.”

He added, “I don’t know those ways. I don’t have access to those people to teach me that stuff or do it for me. Guys like him do so why wouldn’t they do it?”

Brown believes not everybody can afford to drop out from the program for six months, and invest heavily in them only to come back and do it all over again. While guys like Conor on the other hand, have all the resources in the world to continue doing this practice.
