Conor McGregor, without a shred of doubt, is the biggest superstar to have ever stepped foot in the octagon. Despite his having slipped in the rankings over the years, one must never doubt the skill and tenacity that Conor McGregor brings.
Going into his trilogy with Dustin Poirier in 2021, it was believed by many that as much as Dustin Poirier comes alive in championship rounds, often surviving immense adversity to get the win, Conor McGregor’s superb pugilistic ability, which can lay out cold any good fighter, must never be doubted. Of that fight, MMA fans only got to see a single round, as the fight ended prematurely due to McGregor’s leg break.
Seventeen months on, fans are still awaiting McGregor’s impending return. “The Notorious” has himself been vocal about feeling the desire to step foot into the octagon once again – and, a potential opponent by the name of Michael Chandler has been thrown into the mix. Both of them have a similar fight style – that is, both “The Notorious” and “Iron” launch themselves head-first into any bout, throwing caution to the wind.
Now, Michael Bisping has weighed in on the fight and its consequences. He said, “Conor’s got all the money in the world, but he wants that (title), so you’ve got to respect that about him.” He continued, “And coming back against Michael Chandler, if he gets the job done, well, it wouldn’t be crazy to think about a title fight next.”
A brief look at Conor McGregor’s MMA record in the last couple of years
Some fight fans might say that Michael Bisping’s comments might be a little far-fetched given the nature of Conor McGregor’s record in the cage in the last couple of years. A quick look into his record in the UFC in the last six years will serve as a brief inquiry.
Since the beginning of 2016, he is 3-4 in the UFC, with an additional loss to Floyd Mayweather in the ring in 2017. His record, thus begs to ask a question – is one win in the lightweight division enough to guarantee him a title shot? Some fans would disagree stating the obvious depth of the lightweight division, and how there might be more deserving candidates.
On the other hand, McGregor’s contribution to the sport, where he played a massive role in its popularization and helping further percolate it into widespread discourse, is absolutely unquestionable. That being said, there are a lot of hurdles to cross before – firstly, a timeframe must be established from his return, and then a division and opponent decided. Finally, he needs to get a win in his green column to get the wheels turning.
