Michael Bisping is the first fighter from the United Kingdom to win a UFC championship. He won the UFC middleweight title from Luke Rockhold in an upset victory at UFC 199. He went on to defend the title against Dan Henderson before losing it to Georges St-Pierre at Madison Square Garden at UFC 217.
Bisping’s bitter memory at MSG turned sweet at UFC 295. In the co-main event, Tom Aspinall defeated Sergei Pavlovich to win the interim heavyweight championship without undisputed champion Jon Jones. Moreover, the victory made Aspinall the third British fighter to win a UFC title after Michael Bisping and Leon Edwards. Furthermore, Bisping is a big fan of Aspinall and compared him to one of the GOATS in his recent podcast episode. This is what Bisping said on his podcast about Aspinall.
I don't know who's going to stop Tom Aspinall.....He can knock anybody out. He can take anybody down. And he can submit probably all of them, as well. He literally is the heavyweight Georges St. Pierre.Michael Bisping via YouTube
GSP is one of the first well-rounded fighters ever in the UFC. Throughout his career, he was known for his calm and composed demeanor. Moreover, MMA Junkie recently had him as the number-one fighter in the history of MMA.
Furthermore, Bisping believed that Georges St-Pierre and Aspinall shared the same traits in technique and character. Aspinall is the fastest heavyweight fighter MMA has ever seen. It was his speed that won him the title against Pavlovich. Interestingly, Aspinall has stated that Bisping was his hero when it came to being an athlete and a man.
Aspinall is the first UK-born fighter to win the UFC title. Michael Bisping was born in Cyprus, whereas Leon Edwards is Jamaican-born. Edwards will defend his welterweight title at UFC 296, the last PPV of 2024, against Colby Covington. The bout would be Covington’s third crack at the undisputed title. He lost the first two attempts against Kamaru Usman.
Michael Bisping sees a great road ahead for fellow UK UFC champion Tom Aspinall
Tom Aspinall has the lowest average fight time in the UFC. He is closely followed by his recently defeated Sergei Pavlovich. Moreover, Aspinall is one of the well-rounded fighters in the heavyweight division. Furthermore, Michael Bisping, a big admirer of Aspinall, recently sang his praises on his podcast.
Looking at the current state of the heavyweight division, Bisping spoke about Aspinall’s potential future. This is what he said.
He's going to defend that belt many, many times. He's going to go down as the greatest British Mixed Martial artist that we've ever seen. And He's going to make a sh*t ton of money, and he's going to retire a very wealthy man. And you know what? It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic are presumed to retire after their bout. Moreover, with the absence of Jones and Miocic, there are no well-rounded fighters in the heavyweight division. Furthermore, the division is dominated by specialists at the top, like Ciryl Gane, Jailton Almeida, and Curtis Blaydes.
