Heading into UFC 281, Michael Chandler vs Dustin Poirier was dubbed the “people’s main event” by many fans. And when UFC 281 finally came around, the fight did not disappoint. The two lightweights tore down the house in a high-paced, 3 round affair. By the final bell, Dustin Poirier got the win by submitting Chandler.
However, fans sang both fighters’ praises simply because of how entertaining the contest was. Despite this, the bout was not free from controversy. There was an illegal fish hooking attempt from Chandler when he took Poirier’s back, although he denied this. And later in the fight, Chandler blew his nose on Poirier while he was attempting to ground and pound from a mounted position.
In this instance, “Iron” Michael Chandler admitted to his acts. However, he denied that there was any malice behind it and said he was simply trying to clear his airways after Poirier had messed up his nose. “If I wanted to breathe, the blood didn’t even come out. It wasn’t like a malicious, weird thing. But it was definitely like Hey man, sorry you’re down there but I didn’t create gravity”.
And this explanation certainly does make sense when you look at both of the fighters during that round. Poirier and Chandler beat each other to a pulp over the course of the 3-round fight.
Dustin Poirier called Michael Chandler a “dirty motherf****r” for fouls during UFC 281 fight
Even though Chandler claimed that he blew his nose at Dustin Poirier without any malicious forethought, Poirier didn’t buy it. “The Diamond” who won the fight via third-round submission also claimed that he made his feelings known to Chandler at the end of their fight. The two were seen exchanging words at the end of their fight, although it was inaudible to everyone but them.
Though Chandler didn’t reveal what was said in that exchange, Poirier had no problem with spilling the beans. When the #2 lightweight was asked about it at the post-fight press conference, he said, “I told him this is my house. That’s it. And I told him he’s a dirty motherf***er, too, for putting his fingers in my mouth and blowing his nose.”
Despite being embroiled in controversy, the “people’s main event” lived up to its hype and then some. The two lightweights ended up being awarded the “Fight of the Night” bonus. And in the eyes of fans everywhere, they deserved every penny of it.
